Message from Principal Walton

March 17, 2020

Official Communication

Dear Walt Disney Families,

First and foremost, I hope all of you are healthy, well and hanging in!  I would like to offer my sincerest thanks and appreciation for your outstanding support and flexibility during these unprecedented times we find ourselves in.  I have received many messages of encouragement and gratitude from so many of you, and I have to tell you, they mean the absolute world to me.  I am just beyond impressed with how well our staff, students, and all of you have handled this crazy time, and it’s important to me that you know it has definitely not gone unnoticed.  Thank you! I am so very proud to be a member of this community!

As you are aware all schools in the SRVUSD are closed until at least April 13, 2020.  The district has closed and locked all gates surrounding all schools during this time.  As things are evolving and changing so rapidly, we have been working to stay caught up.  Our Ed Services department at the district office has been working around the clock to get a learning plan in place for all of our students.  Please continue to be patient as details continue to get finalized.  For the most recent, up to date information, please visit the district Coronavirus website.  The district Communications department will continue to send out updates and messages via email as well.  Our Child Nutrition department is providing drive thru or curbside pickup meals at our school, Monday-Friday from 11:30-1:00.  Please see the flyer at the bottom of this email for additional information.  Children must be present.

This is a scary time, as fear of the unknown looms over our heads, but please remember your little ones can sense that fear in all of us, and are looking to you for reassurance and guidance.  Here are some articles I found to be helpful in discussing COVID-19 with children:

If you are on any kind of social media, or really, just on the internet, I am sure you have seen the schedules, activities, and lessons many parents are planning for their children during this time of school closure.  Kids thrive on stability, consistency and routine, so a schedule is a wonderful idea, but I urge you to not over stress yourself!  This is a great opportunity to focus on some whole-child learning:

Life Skills:

  • Learn/practice to tie shoes
  • Memorize parents’ phone numbers
  • Memorize home address
  • Learn how to ride a bike/scooter/skateboard (rain is expected to clear soon!)
  • Learn how to do laundry (sorting, folding, wash settings, dry settings)
  • Learn how to make/pack lunch
  • Clean the bathroom
  • Organize toys/dresser/closet
  • Do the dishes
  • Bake something!
  • Cook something!

Adventure Awaits:

  • Go on a hike!
  • Track your steps each day, making both long and short-term goals
  • Nature scavenger hunt (in backyard or around the neighborhood, make a list for kiddos to see/find: pink flower, butterfly, 10 sticks, a blue bird, etc.)
  • Yard work (pull weeds, rake leaves, sweep)
  • Obstacle course
  • Family walk, run or bike ride
  • Build a fort

Community Service:

  • Draw pictures and write letters for the elderly quarantined in their homes or living centers
  • Send thank you cards/notes to all healthcare workers (doctors, nurses, etc.) and first responders (police, fire, EMTs) for their hard work and sacrifice during this time
  • Write a letter to your teacher(s), or classmate(s), or principal!

The lists go on and on, truly!  Research more ideas online as you need to during this time, but do it at your own pace, in your own way, and do not let yourself get stressed that you are not doing enough…because you are!

Take care and I will be in touch.  As always, please contact me directly with any questions, concerns, or at this point, just to say hello and let me know what you and the kiddos are up to…we are all missing them!
